I watched an ABC medical report where the reporter underwent a medical procedure to measure the flow of blood to the reporter’s heart after a high (bad fat) meal. After she ate the meal blood was drawn to test the amount of fat in her blood. You could actually see the fat floating in her vile of blood. She was connected to a heart monitor before and after the meal to measure the amount of stress the food placed on her heart. Turns out the circulating fat from the meal obstructed the flow of blood to the heart, causing it to work much harder to pump blood. This is an example of postprandial inflammation, a medical term that refers to the metabolic affect that occurs after each meal. A high fat meal is responsible for creating a low-grade inflammatory response throughout the body.
Postprandial inflammation is responsible for a host of age related physical problems such as diabetes, cancer, digestive problems, allergies, heart disease and many other chronic disorders. Every time you eat your body’s immune system reacts to the food by turning up the body’s inflammatory response, in the same manner as if the body is being invaded by an unwanted pathogen. The inflammatory furnace that turns on every time you eat is a normal reaction to eating. Its what you eat and how frequently, that determines how long your postprandial furnace continues to burns.
Processed foods, saturated fats, fried foods, vegetable oils, soybean and safflower oils increase the levels of pro-inflammatory omega 6’s. Prior to the advent of modern day factory foods our ancestors had a pretty good balance between pro and anti-inflammatory foods. Today its more lopsided with the ratio of omega 6 inflammatory foods being as much as 30 times higher than omega 3’s.
Jack Challem, author of “The Inflammation Syndrome,” explains that Alzheimer’s disease, aching muscles, stiff fingers, arthritic joints and some forms of cancer are the underlining result of inflammation. He further states that the core of inflammatory diseases is the “itis” diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, obesity, arthritis, psoriasis, periodontal disease (gum disease). Add to this list, is asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and rhinitis. Essentially every disease, ache or pains stems from the inflammatory process.. The body has the ability to both fight against and to promote inflammation. It all depends on what you eat.
As mentioned, you need to avoid unhealthy foods full of processed chemicals that produce inflammatory agents. Instead, consume cold water fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, halibut, grass-fed meats, fruits, vegetable and healthy oils, like olive, coconut, macadamia and avocado. In addition to food, excess weight plays a significant role in the production inflammation. Dr. Leo Galland, author of “The Fat Resistance Diet,” explains that fat cells contribute to inflammatory activities throughout the body by spreading beyond the fat tissues and spilling into the blood system. The higher the fat in your body the more inflammation the body makes, which prevents weight loss by raising the levels of insulin and cortisol that actually causes the body to make you fatter.
Inflammation levels can be determined by measuring the body’s C-reactive proteins (CRP) which should be measured each time you have your annual physical. Controlling your inflammation levels is very important. Mild elevation of your CRP blood levels can mean an increased risk of heart disease. If you have one inflammatory disease it’s very likely you will develop another. Controlling your inflammation levels goes beyond eating the proper foods. Dr. Mark Spengler, in his April 2009 “Natural Healing” newsletter, recommends a good multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D, red yeast rice extract, along with a antioxidant, such as pycnogenol and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
Dr. Marcus Laux in his April 2009 “Naturally Well Today” newsletter recommends a supplement called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural fatty acid that reduces the “markers of inflammation” levels.
