Many of our 3000 hours of testimonial stories are amazing and while I believe Ringmaster Rubbing Oil is a remarkable product, I have always had the belief that an unseen force empowered by the energy of human touch is a necessary catalyst for helping relieve chronic pain. The Facts about vitamin D

Its a well known fact that vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium to strengthen bones. But that’s just one of the many benefits of vitamin D. Consider recent studies from Harvard University and the University of Heidelberg, in Germany, which established a clear liknk between vitamin D deficiency and the increased risk of heart attacks among males. For men, at risk for heart disease,  levels should be checked at least three times a year.

I was in a meeting the other day when one of the partiipants had to leave early to take his 3-year old daughter to the doctor to be treated for the flu. Vitamin D is important in helping to strengthen the immune system. Children are vulnerable to all kinds of cold and flu germs during the winter months. They are pretty effective at passing germs around for adults and other children to cope with.  Children who are exposed to sunlight (a natural source of vitamin D) are less likely to get a cold. Each morning, during the winter months, my mother loaded me an my five siblings up with cod liver oil ( a good source of vitamin D) and occasionally Father Johns cough medicine and caster oil to treat  coughs. We all hated the taste of cod liver and castor oil.  But every kid in the neighborhood was under threat by their parents to take their daily dose of vitamin D rich cod liver oil to protect them against colds, rickets, and a host of other diseases.

Many Black children during the 50’s and 60’s suffered from rickets, a bone deformity caused by vitamin D deficiency.  Bow legs were a common condition resulting from inadequate levels of vitamin D.  Mothers did not have the science to back them up but they knew that a tablespoon of  cod liver oil was an excellent source of vitamin D and made a daily dose a household requirement.  The American Academy of Pediatrics has changed its daily vitamin D recommendation from 200 IUs to 400 IUs per day. But  some doctors are now recommending  the upper limits of 2000 IUs per day.

Adequate vitamin D starts with the mother, which is why the Canadian Pediatric Society has issued dosage guidelines for pregnant and lactating mothers.  Sufficient vitamin D levels during pregnancy can have lifetime implications on the prevention of disease for mother and child.  4000 to 6000 IUs are considered enough to provide sufficient vitamin D in breast milk.  There have been misunderstandings about the toxicity of vitamin D but the Canadian study dosed as high as 10,000 IUs for five months without toxicity.

Government and pediatric organizations are behind the curve with the recommended daily dosage of only 200 to 400 IUs.  Studies have shown that millions of American children are dangerously deficient in vitamin D which can decrease calcium absorption.  In adults this vitamin D/calcium deficiency can result in serious skeletal development, muscle, weakness and poor mineralization of the bones.  This reduced bone density ultimately results in osteoporosis (porous bones).

For those of us who suffer through the winter months of gloomy, grey days depression can be a major health problem both physically and mentally.  The disruption of sunlight affects our body clock and its ability to function properly.  Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD) is a common winter mental disorder that results in seasonal depression.  In 1998 Australian researchers determined, in a double blind study, that vitamin D3 significantly enhanced positive mental attitudes with only 400 to 800IUs  taken daily during the late winter months.  This study showed a compelling correlation between vitamin D deficiency and seasonal mood disorder.  During the last century depression has increased due to the reduction in exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun.  The modernization of our society has depleted our vitamin D levels by putting more workers into buildings, pollution obscuring the sun, while many people are being advised to avoid the sun.

If these facts are not bad enough a recent study revealed that older people who are depressed are more likely to develop the kind of visceral fat around the internal organs that can lead to type 2 diabetes.  Some researchers believe that the accumulation of belly fat is a result of cortisol, a hormone that is produced in response to stress.

Studies show that vitamin D deficiency has a direct influence on whether you die from the flu, pneumonia, colds or some other infection.  Austrian researchers determined that vitamin D deficient patients were more likely to die of heart related complications.  Especially, darker skinned people whose natural skin pigmentation filters out the ultra violet rays of the sun.  Vitamin D acts as a natural antibiotic and antiviral compound to fight respiratory infections.  Vitamin D acts as a deterrent to eighteen different forms of cancer, along with diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, lupus and high blood pressure.

Vitamin D increases the production of natural killer cells that strengthens the immune systems to protect against harmful pathogens.  Vitamin D3 is the recommended type of vitamin D to take along with some form of good fat for more efficient absorption.  The body uses cholesterol to make vitamin  D which acts more as a hormone which is transported to various receptor cells throughout the body.  Optimal levels are 45 to 50 ng/ml.

Last year we attended a major hair show to find out just how widespread carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is among hair stylist. Winterizing yourself against arthritis pain

It never fails.  As soon as the weather turns cold along comes those pesky winter pains.  A Ringmaster Rubbing Oil customer told me that when it gets cold he has to return to using his walker.  Blood flow is affected by cold weather, causing the constriction of the arteries that impedes the flow of blood to the muscles.  He knew that rubbing with Ringmater Rubbing Oil would help to stimulate his blood flow.   The cold weather caused his muscles to tighten up and his joints to stiffen.  Cold temperatures causes the natural lubricating fluids to thicken up and reduce the body’s ability to oil the joints.

The opposite occurs with the thermal effects of the sun, which causes the blood vessels and capillaries to expand and promote increased circulation.  Even without the cold weather taking its toll on our bodies USA Today newspaper predicts by 2030 a quarter of the adult population is expected to be afflicted with doctor diagnosed arthritis.

Since we know that arthritis is on the way we need to build our defenses starting with avoiding certain foods.  Night shade vegetables can trigger arthritis attacks, because of the body’s inability to metabolize a chemical compound in nightshade plants known as solanine alkaloids. Some of the nightshade vegetables include tomatoes, potatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, paprika, cayenne pepper and Tabasco sauce. Not everyone with arthritis is affected by nightshade vegetables.  Learning your sensitivity to nightshades has to be done through trial and error.  Avoid them for several months to see if it makes a difference in your symptoms.

 Stay oiled

Consuming enough essential fatty acids, like those found in cold water, cod liver oil or omega 3 (DHA EPA) supplements can provide some protection for the body against arthritis pains.  Essential fatty acids cannot be made by the body;  they must come from dietary sources.  When the cartilage is worn it becomes rubbery and loses its elasticity and becomes prone to pain and inflammation.  Many of our customers who suffer from osteoarthritis (a wearning out of cartilage between the joints) also use glucosamine sulfate or a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin.   These are naturally occurring compounds found in the body that help rebuild cartilage.

Some doctors only prescribe glucosomine sulfate since there is some question about chondroitin and the risk of prostate cancer.  No one knows for sure if there is a risk of prostate cancer with the use of chondroitin.  If you have prostate issues it might be best to avoid chondroitin until a definitive answer is found.

Hyaluronic acid is another naturally occurring substance that is an important part of healthy cartilage formation.  It is found in the lubricating fluid of the joints, behind the eyes, in the skin and in the creation of synovial fluid, the oil that helps to reduce friction between the joints.  It is available as an oral supplement or can be injected directly into the knee by a qualified doctor.

Drink plenty of water

None of these nutrients will do you any good if do not drink enough water, which contains life-sustaining minerals.  The human body is composed of 70 percent water and cannot survive longer than five days without it.  The disk in our spines is 70 to 90 percent water and without proper hydration back stiffness and mechanical dysfunction will result.  To work properly the spinal disk squeezes out water and reabsorbs it on a continual basis.  Without enough water, the disk will shrink and not adequately support the weight of the body.

Stay flexed

Treating Gout Naturally

The other day I saw an acquaintance of mine limping down the street in pain from an acute attack of gout.  Over the years we have compiled thousands of hours of Ringmaster Rubbing Oil testimonials on audio tape to determine its various uses and to validate the efficacy of our product.  The stories that are the most compelling involve people with intense pain.  Especially those people suffering from gout, which is a type of arthritis caused by a crystallization of uric acid that concentrates in the joints, causing severe pain and inflammation.

Ringmaster does an effective job in reducing the pain and inflammation of gout but it does not cure it.  Essentially, gout occurs in people who don’t produce sufficient amounts of the necessary digestive enzyme to dissolve uric acid enough to prevent it from accumulating in the blood and tissues that ultimately form into needle like crystals.

                                      Gout and the big toe

Gout is also known as Podagra when it affects the big toe.  Uric acid is more likely to crystallize at lower temperatures which is why it localizes in the big toe which is , furthest from the heart.  However, gout can also affect the knee, foot, ankle, wrist and even the fingers.  Uric acid is formed from foods high purines and proteins, such as organ meats, red meat, shellfish, beer and soft drinks.

Ninety-five percent of all gout patients are men over 30.  The British Medical Journal published a 12 year study on 43,000 men with no history of gout.  The study concluded that there was a correlation between the incidence of gout and the consumption  of high fructose sweetened soft drinks.  Fructose in fruit and juice also increases the risk of gout.  Other purine producing foods are herring, muscles, sardines, hearts, smelt and yeast. Complex carbohydrates such fruits and vegetables can reduce the symptoms of gout.  Increasing your consumption of clear liquids can help flush out uric acid.  Losing weight can also help to reduce the build up of uric acid.

Many gout sufferers say the pain is so pronounced they can’t even stand to have the bed sheet touch their toe.  To prevent a re-occurence of gout you have to consider such things as diet and nutrients as a safe way to treat gout. Gout  often occurs after a night of drinking alcohol and eating the wrong foods.  In my case it was a big plate of fried chicken wings and three glasses of wine, without drinking water.   I don’t ordinarily eat fried wings but my friend ordered them and convinced me to help him finish off the plate.  These were the perfect ingredients (protein and alcohol) for an acute attack of gout.  The next day Mr. Gout took of residence in my right knee and stayed there for three days.

It took a combination of Ringmaster Rubbing Oil and 500mg of Bromelain enzyme capsules, every three hours to evict it.  After that experience with gout I am very careful with my diet and as an extra precaution I take natural enzyme tablets to enhance my digestion and 3 grams of omega fish oil and a multivitamin to help block inflammation.  I even munch on celery sticks, occasionally, to keep my uric acids levels low enough to prevent an attack.  Dr. Jonathan Wright of Tahoma Clinic, in Seattle Washington, writes in his “Nutrition & Healing” newsletter that low doses of lithium (a trace mineral:and 2 grams of vitamin C prevents the uric acids from crystallizing by making it easier for the body to disolve.  Conventional doctors use anti-inflammatory drugs that increase uric acid excretion and decrease the production of uric acid.

Areas of the world with highest lithim levels have the lowest levels of gout.  Bromelain, my favorite, is a digestive enzyme made from pineapple and other fruits, is also an effective treatment for gout.  Folic acid is also known to block the enzyme that causes the production of uric acid.  Unsweetened cherry juice is a popular treatment for preventing or treating gout.  Cherry juice can be purchased at a health food store.

Dr. Dr. David Campbell, publisher of the “Alternatives” newsletter, said celery seed extract works consistently on gout.  Clinical studies using 34 mg. of celery seed extract showed significant reduction in pain after three weeks of use.  Perhaps the bible had the best answer in treating gout, with the olive leaf, which was referenced in the book of Ezekiel 47:12: “The fruit thereof shall be for meat and the leaf thereof for medicine.  Olive leaf extract has been studied as a successful treat for gout.  Supplements from the stinging nettle leaf plant, an herb that grows wild in temperate regions of the world, has been used by European doctors to reduce uric acid build-up associated with gout.

Beating arthritis the old-fashioned way

Many women complain of suffering from osteoporosis.  The name is derived from the Latin word which literally means “porous bones.”  Women start losing bone mass in their early twenties.  Diet lifestyle and medications leach calcium from the bones.  After menopause, bones become even more porous and weak, increasing the likelihood of a stress fracture in the hip, back or wrist.

Women tend to lose bone mass beginning in the early twenties and accelerates after menopause due to the absence of estrogen.  this certainly explains why 90 percent of our customers who purchase our product, Ringmaster Rubbing Oil are women over 50 years of age who frequently complain of osteoarthritis knee problems and bone deterioration following a thinning of the bone from osteoporosis.

Why women suffer from arthritis/osteoporosis earlier in life than men has been a question my family has pondered for many years.  The steady climb in osteoporosis is in concert with the increased consumption of processed food that produce acid.  The inside of the bone afflicted with osteoporosis sort of looks like a sponge with a lot of little pinholes that need to be refilled with new bone.  To protect against bone loss it is important to get a minimum daily amount of 1500 mg of calcium, along with magnesium, zinc, manganese, vitamin D3 and vitamin K to improve calcium absorption.  You would need to drink five glasses of milk a day to get that much calcium.  Bones are constantly recycling themselves, breaking down and re-building themselves just like your hair and nails.

It is common for women not to notice any changes in their bone mass until it is too late when they begin to experience symptoms like a broken or fractured bone, often in the wrist or hip.  Even prolonged stress can deplete calcium levels.  Early warning signs that may signal loss of bone mass are a loss of height, a stooping or rounding of the shoulders and suffering  back pain.  Interestingly , Asian women rarely develop osteoporosis because of a higher source of calcium from sea vegetables that contain magnesium and natural muscle relaxants.  Calcium can also be gotten from a variety of fruits, vegetables and beverages.

“Where is the beef?”  Consuming animal products causes the body to become more acidic.  Calcium is taken from the bones to neutralize the acids, causing your bone mass to become weak and porous.  Turns out that women in the U.S. who consume meat products have the highest rates of hip fractures and the worst bone health in the world.  Osteoporosis also affects men, except in lower numbers and later in life, since men continue to produce androgen (a male hormone that controls the development of masculine chracteristics).

Studies have shown that the hip and bone fracture rate is in direct proportion to the amount of meat consumption.  If you consume two or more soft drinks every day, the phosphorus acid in the pop will also leach the calcium from your bones.  After eating sugar there is a increase in the urinary excretion of calcium.   Studies have shown a direct link between the calcium loss in the bone and heart disease, stemming from the excess calcium that is diverted to the arteries.  Meat protein, unlike plant protein creates an acidic environment.

Fluoride is a trace mineral found in drinking water and toothpaste.  While it was originally thought that fluoride was good for the development of your bones, studies have shown the opposite; fluoride is bad for development of your bones.  Consuming fluoride can increase your chances of incurring a bone fracture by 20 to 40 percent.  Distillation and reverse osmosis are the only way to get rid of the fluoride in your water.  One way of determining if you are getting enough minerals is through a hair mineral analysis that checks for 30 to 50 minerals.  The results should be read by a qualified professional who understands how to read the results.

A University of Pennsylvania study compared hip fracture cases with people using drug for acid reflux.  Researchers determined that proton pump inhibitor drugs (PPI) increased the risk of hip fracture by 44 percent.  A Canadian study at McGill University has shown that the most  popular antidepressant pills may decrease bone strength resulting in osteoporosis.  Antidepressants have also been linked to low blood pressure, leading to a higher probability of fracture related falls.

The bottom line- This  discussion on nutrition is to encourage you to reduce or avoid meat products and a diet high in refined carbohydrates like refined sugar, sugary cereals, pastas, refined white flour, candy, animal products and inflammation producing processed foods.  In fact, it is safer to avoid processed foods completely and concentrate on complex carbohydrates in fresh vegetables and fruits.  If you have to eat meat make sure it is organic and free of hormones, antibiotics and pesticides.
