Eat your broccoli: It may save your life

Back when Bill Clinton was president he expressed his dislike for broccoli, which created a lot of media hype.  Like many people Mr. Clinton was probably repelled by broccoli’s distinctive, slightly bitter, mustard like flavor that creates its pungent taste.  This flavor comes from glucosinolates, one of broccolis anti-cancer compounds, which can cause pre-cancerous cells to destroy themselves in a process call apoptosis.

This research comes from studies conducted by the Institute of Food Research, showing that when juiced broccoli was added to cancer cells the survival rate was reduced by 95 percent.

Broccoli comes from the cruciferous family of vegetables, which includes cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, bok choy, radish, turnip, mustard greens and broccoli sprouts.  While intact the beneficial compounds found in cruciferous vegetables are not present.  Once the cell-walls of the vegetables are broken down by cutting, juicing or chewing they convert into enzymes that creates an anti-cancer substance called Indole-3-Carbinol.

According to the American Association for Cancer Research, burgeoning evidence shows that changing your diet can reduce your chances of developing cancer.  Up to a third of all cancers are believed to be diet related.  The risk of cancer can be reduced by increasing the amount of fruits and cruciferous vegetables.

Results from the Polish Women’s Health Study revealed an association between cabbage and sauerkraut consumption and the lower risk of breast cancer.   Especially, among women who consumed higher amounts of cabbage that began during adolescence and continued throughout adulthood.

Dorothy Patlak, PhD, from the University of New Mexico, wondered why Polish women had a threefold increase in breast cancer after they immigrated to the United states.  She hypothesized those dietary changes, after moving to the U.S., contributed to the rapid rise in breast cancer.  Pathak,  along with colleagues from Michigan State University and the National Food and Nutrition Institute of Warsaw evaluated the diets of Polish immigrants from Chicago Illinois and Detroit  They determined that women who ate three or more servings per week of raw or short cooked cabbage had significantly reduced cancer risk than women who consumed less than one serving per week.

The sulfur containing compound in cruciferous vegetables is called sulforaphane.  Although found in other cruciferous vegetables, broccoli sprouts contain 2 to 100 more of the cancer fighting compounds.  Sulforaphane is one of the most powerful anti-cancer agents found in cruciferous vegetables.  UCLA researchers found that sulforaphane triggers an increase of antioxidant enzymes in the human airway that may help protect against respiratory inflammation that causes conditions such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dr. Marc Riedi, the study’s principle investigator, showed that broccoli sprouts offered potent biological effects in stimulating an antioxidant response in humans.  Epidemiological studies (people who study factors that affect health) have consistently linked the plentiful consumption of fruits and vegetables to lowering the risk of developing cancer.  Unfortunately, the majority of vegetable intake consist of potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and lettuce which are not as effective in preventing cancer.  In a study published last year, in the food Chemistry Journal, extracts from 34 vegetables were isolated to determine their inhibitory affects on the  proliferation of eight different tumor cell lines.  The extracts from the cruciferous and alliums vegetables, such as onions, garlic, shallots, leeks and chives, are high in beneficial sulfur compounds.  Both classifications of vegetables demonstrated anti-cancer dietary properties.

A group of scientist from John Hopkins University formulated a cream using broccoli sprout extract.  They discovered that the sulphoraphane in the cream boosted the body’s immune system to defend against the ultraviolet radiation of the sun.  Not only did the cream protect the skin cells from sun damage, it allowed the vitamin D from the sun to be absorbed by the skin.

As reported in Bio-Medicine magazine, other scientist at John Hopkins used the chemicals from the broccoli and its related vegetables to help prevent the severe blistering and skin breakage from a potentially fatal genetic disease called epi-dermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS).  Researchers at MIT have determined that cruciferous vegetables help to maintain and preserve memory.  Also, brain damage can be minimized after the occurrence of a stroke.  For smokers, broccoli has been shown to have a protective effect on the lungs.  These findings show promise for people who are having trouble giving up smoking but want to protect their lungs from tobacco carcinogens.  The suforaphanes may also inhibit colon caner, leukemia, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and stomach cancer.

The health hazards of inflammation

I watched an ABC medical report where the reporter underwent a medical procedure to measure the flow of blood to the reporter’s heart after a high (bad fat) meal.  After she ate the meal blood was drawn to test the amount of fat in her blood. You could actually see the fat floating in her vile of blood.  She was connected to a heart monitor before and after the meal to measure the amount of stress the food placed on her heart.  Turns out the circulating fat from the meal obstructed the flow of blood to the heart, causing it to work much harder to pump blood.  This is an example of postprandial inflammation, a medical term that refers to the metabolic affect that occurs after each meal. A high fat meal is responsible for creating a low-grade inflammatory response throughout the body.

Postprandial inflammation is responsible for a host of age related physical problems such as diabetes, cancer, digestive problems, allergies, heart disease and many other chronic disorders.  Every time you eat your body’s immune system reacts to the food by turning up the body’s inflammatory response, in the same manner as if the body is being invaded by an unwanted pathogen.  The inflammatory furnace that turns on every time you eat is a normal reaction to eating.  Its what you eat and how frequently, that determines how long your postprandial furnace continues to burns.

Processed foods, saturated fats, fried foods, vegetable oils, soybean and safflower oils increase the levels of pro-inflammatory omega 6’s. Prior to the advent of modern day factory foods our ancestors had a pretty good balance between pro and anti-inflammatory foods.  Today its more lopsided with the ratio of omega 6 inflammatory foods being as much as 30 times higher than omega 3’s.

Jack Challem, author of “The Inflammation Syndrome,” explains that Alzheimer’s disease, aching muscles, stiff fingers, arthritic joints and some forms of cancer are the underlining result of inflammation.  He further states that the core of inflammatory diseases is the “itis” diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, obesity, arthritis, psoriasis, periodontal disease (gum disease).   Add to this list, is asthma, rheumatoid arthritis and rhinitis.  Essentially every disease, ache or pains stems from the inflammatory process.. The body has the ability to both fight against and to promote inflammation.  It all depends on what you eat.

As mentioned, you need to avoid unhealthy foods full of processed chemicals that produce inflammatory agents.  Instead, consume cold water fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, halibut, grass-fed meats, fruits, vegetable and healthy oils, like olive, coconut, macadamia and avocado. In addition to food, excess weight plays a significant role in the production inflammation.  Dr. Leo Galland, author of “The Fat Resistance Diet,”  explains that fat cells contribute to inflammatory activities throughout the body by spreading beyond the fat tissues and spilling into the blood system. The higher the fat in your body the more inflammation the body makes, which prevents weight loss by raising the levels of insulin and cortisol that actually causes the body to make you fatter.

Inflammation levels can be determined by measuring the body’s C-reactive proteins (CRP) which should be measured each time you have your annual physical.  Controlling your inflammation levels is very important.  Mild elevation of your CRP blood levels can mean an increased risk of heart disease. If you have one inflammatory disease it’s very likely you will develop another.  Controlling your inflammation levels goes beyond eating the proper foods.   Dr. Mark Spengler, in his April 2009 “Natural Healing” newsletter, recommends a good multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D, red yeast rice extract, along with a antioxidant, such as pycnogenol and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).

Dr. Marcus Laux in his April 2009 “Naturally Well Today” newsletter recommends a supplement called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a natural fatty acid that reduces the “markers of inflammation” levels.  MOI  reduces body fat in overweight people while enhancing muscle mass.  There are many other foods and nutrients that can help you control the internal fires of disease.  Consult with doctor trained and knowledgeable in natural medicine to determine the best course of treatment.

Benefits of vitamins minerals and herbs

Every so often a controversy erupts in the media that questions the need to take vitamins.  Critics say taking vitamins is just a way of creating expensive urine.  Recently I saw a doctor on television “say that most vitamins are useless”.  Tell that to the researchers at Hyper Health who developed a a 30 thousand page, evidence based database on nutrients with supporting clinical studies.  Talk to the professionals at Life Extension Foundation, the worlds’ largest research organization on natural medicine.  LEF continually publishes  groundbreaking studies on vitamins, minerals, herbs and food and other natural treatments.    Need more proof?  Read the 869 page book “Prescription for Nutritional Healing” on drug-free remedies..

By the time the public hears about a significant benefit from a particular nutrient the news as circulated for five years or longer in the natural health newsletters and industry publications.  Sometimes the research goes back even further.  For example, in 1946 a doctor, Arthur Alexander Knapp, published a paper call “The Eye as a guide to latent nutritional deficiencies.”  He outlined his observations and treatments of navy personnel in the South Pacific.  Dr. Knapp found that treating patients with severe myopia (near sightedness) with vitamin D and calcium stopped or retarded the progression of myopia in 50% of the cases, with 30% experiencing improvement in their vision.   Using a before and after plaster cast Dr. Knapp proved that supplementation with vitamin D and calcium actually changed the shape of the eye.  He also found that vitamin D and calcium treatments improved conditions related to retinitis pigmentosa, an abnormal pigmentation of the retina that can cause blindness.

Everyone treated with vitamin D and calcium had an improvement.  Dr. Knapp speculated that cataracts could be a symptom of poor diet, along with vitamin D and calcium deficiency.  Many researchers report that vitamin D deficiency among the general population is epidemic.  This can have serious health results, since low D levels can impact the health of different  organs, shorten life spans and has been associated with 22 different forms of cancer, coupled  with a host of other diseases and illnesses.

Most doctors and pharmacist say it is not necessary for a daily probiotic supplement when taking oral antibiotics, which depletes both good and bad bacteria. Eighty  percent of all antibiotics are used in the meat industry to prevent infections in the animals. This  high usage of antibiotics in the meat industry  along with  other anti-bacterial products has created the perfect storm for bacteria to become more resistant to antibiotic treatment. Nutritionist and naturopathic doctors argue that our immunity is based on the health of digestive tract.  Antibiotics can disrupt the bacterial balance in our the digestive tract..

Probiotics helps to produce beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract for proper digestion, strengthening of the immune system and fighting off disease-causing bacteria. and viruses.  if you are planning to enter the hospital probiotics can help toughen the immune system against MRSA, a powerful bacteria commonly found in hospitals.  The University of Washington determined that use of lactobacillus cultures can promote faster recovery from diarrhea by secreting their own antibiotics to dangerous pathogens.  Maintaining the right balance of probiotic yeast can often help fight off candida infections and inflammatory conditions of the vaginal tissues.

Researchers at the University Medical Center in Ultrecht in the Netherlands studied 55 children with juvenile arthritis and found that a child’s vitamin  K status had long term implications on  bone health.  Higher levels of vitamin K can benefit these children.  This study adds to the growing body of evidence that bone mineral content and mass is directly related to healthy levels of vitamin K2.  325 women with  no sign of osteoporosis benefited  by taking vitamin K2 supplements during a three year study period that boosted their bone mineral content.

Coenzxyme Q10 commonly referred to as CoQ10, was first isolated in 1957 and put into use by the Japanese in the mid-1960’s  for treatment of congestive heart failure.  It was also the Japanese who created the technology necessary to produce Q10 in major quantities.  Q10 is a major antioxidant that is referred as a ubiquinone because of its existence in all living organisms.  In 1978 PhD chemist Peter Mitchell received the Nobel Prize for his studies on Q10’s ability to transfer energy to the cells.  Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra’s book “The Coenzyme Q10 Phenomenon” details how Q10 benefits the heart, protects against periodontal disease, diabetes, skin damage, male infertility and cancer, to name a few.  In addition to Dr. Sinatra’s book hundreds of clinical studies and citations have been published.

In spite of the benefits of vitamins, minerals, herbs and even foods, there can still be interactions with your prescription meds.  Discuss any nutrient use with your doctor to ensure there is no conflict with your medications.

Beating arthritis the old fashion way

My father, Frank Sewell, suffered several crippling illnesses during his lifetime which motivated him to learn to treat the whole person with his medicated oil.  He did this by employing alternative complimentary and spiritual methods of treating his arthritis.  It is our hope to provide our reader with lessons we have learned from my father and thousands of people who shared their stories after using our product, Ringmaster Rubbing Oil.  .

Ringmaster Rubbing Oil is a  powerful, aspirin based, topical rub in a peanut oil base.  It contains the synthetic counter part of the natural salicylates drawn from the inner bark of the birch tree called “the lady of the woods.”  It has been used for centuries as a source of aspirin like pain relief by reducing or eliminating pain associated with arthritis.   The American Indians knew the medicinal benefits of the birch tree.  They used the leaves to make tea for headaches and to relieve the pains of rheumatism, abdominal cramps and healing wounds.  As a result Ringmaster dramatically reduces pain, increases circulation and improves range of motion through self-application or professional therapy.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.  Twenty-one million people, in America,  suffer pains from a wearing down of the load-bearing joints.  By the time we become senior citzens, most of us experience deterioration of the load bearing joints, especially the knees.  Most complain of early morning stiffness along with pain following a period of rest or inactivity. The pain gets even worse with mild activity, especially during cold weather when the blood circulation slows down because of constriction of the arteries and slight thickening of the blood.  This disease  is further evidenced by a wearing down of the cartilage, causing restricted range of movement, inflammation, pain, tenderness and swelling.  These problems may result in mechanical failure in parts of a joint that may necessitate a surgical replacement of the knee.

Often the cause of joint disorders is an inflammation produced by infection, disease or some unknown cause.  Most joint ailments caused by inflammation are termed “arthritis” from the Greek word “arthron.” for joint. The ends of the bones that meet in a joint are cushioned with a layer of resilient tissue called cartilage, which acts like a sponge that holds a lubricating substance called synovial fluid.  This fluid enables our joints to glide back and forth without friction.

Basically, what occurs in a person with osteoarthritis is that the cartilage that cushions the impact on the joint gradually deteriorates, its smooth surface roughens and loses it cushioning effect.  Over time, the ends of the bones are affected with bone growing along the sides.of the joint to produce lumps. Each step produces pains, with bones cracking and popping.

Having the ideal weight can do a lot in taking the pressure off  your load bearing joints and improving your skeletal health.  The single most important tool in managing your arthritis is maintaining a healthy weight, especially those with osteoarthritis, whose symptoms can be aggravated by excess weight. The symptoms can be reduced once the excess weight is lost.  Obesity places excess load on the ankles, knees and back.  Every additional pound you are overweight adds increased joint pressure by a factor of three to four times the extra weight.   For example, if you are 20 pounds overweight, multiply 20 the pounds by three or four, which will equal 60 to 80 pounds of extra weight on both knees, plus your normal weight.

Substituting simple carbohydrates and processed foods with fish, colorful, fresh vegetables and fruits can start you on the road to losing weight, while reducing painful inflammation.  Omega 3 fatty acids found in supplements or cold water fish, such as salmon, tuna, trout, sardines, herring and mackerel can reduce the kind of inflammation that triggers painful arthritis attacks.  Make an effort to eat baked fish at least three times a week. Stay away from fish high in mercury.   It has been shown that a diet rich in non-acidic fruits, whole grains and brown rice are necessary parts of your diet treatment.

Food allergies increase with age.  For some unknown reason nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes, white potatoes, eggplant, green peppers and corn cause a worsening of arthritis pain.  Nightshade vegetables contain a substance called solanine, a naturally occurring toxin that some people are sensitive to.  Salonine interferes with the enzymes in the muscles causing pain and discomfort.  Some practitioners feel the alkaloids in nightshade plants inhibit the production of collagen that makes up cartilage. Finding the food that is causing  the problem might require a fasting diet by eliminating suspected foods to determine which ones you are sensitive to

Male Testosterone: The elixir of life

About three years ago I attended a lecture on (BIHRT) Bio identical hormone replacement therapy to find out what role testosterone levels played in the overall health of men.  BIHRT is a natural method of replacing declining hormones with the use of a cream derived from a yam-based prescription, formulated by a compounding pharmacist, to match the biology of the patient.  Since I was feeling fatigued most of the time.  I planned to take this new found knowledge to my doctor to check my “bound” and “free” testosterone levels.  Free hormones circulate mostly in the blood without being attached to anything.  The bound testosterone is attached to a protein call SHBG, a sex hormone binding globulin, with a smaller amount bound to albumin, the main protein in human blood.  Free and bound testosterone levels constitute the total amount of testosterone, with free testosterone, representing only a small percentage, about 1-3 percent, of the overall levels.

Turns out my overall testosterone levels were low, which contributed to my lack of energy.  In order to increase my testosterone levels my doctor consulted with a compounding pharmacy lab skilled in natural hormone replacement therapy.  Based on my lab results they recommended DHEA supplements which is a major circulating hormone in the body that helps to increase testosterone levels.  Milk thistle an herb that helps to detoxify  the liver along with Indole Carbinole 13, derived from the cabbage family of vegetables. After about six months of taking the supplements I experienced a 30 percent increase in my testosterone levels.

Low testosterone levels affect more than just energy levels, loss of confidence and mood swings, which is why the Life Extension Foundation has encouraged its male members to have their blood tested for testosterone and critical hormones.  A man’s testosterone peaks by the time he is in his late twenties and for most men declines significantly by the age of 50.  Additional studies are showing that overall testosterone levels in men are inexplicably dropping at younger ages, exposing men to earlier age related diseases.  Research shows that the common result from testosterone deficiency is diminished sex drive, loss of muscle mass and low bone mineral density.

More and more studies are revealing other health problems associated with low testosterone, related to a complex of conditions, resulting from Metabolic Syndrome, which is characterized by excess weight around the midsection that  soaks up testosterone.  This combination of factors sometimes occurs together, manifested by hypertension, high LDL’s (referred to a bad cholesterol) insulin resistance, high triglycerides (blood fats) along with a greater risk for diabetes and stroke.  Men with low testosterone also have a greater risk for severe coronary and carotid artery blockage than men with higher levels of free testosterone.

Unfortunately, most doctors don’t view testosterone as the cause of the problem.  Instead, the patient’s symptoms are treated with anti-depressants or other drugs rather than treating the hormonal levels.  Advanced medicine doctors have established a clear connection between diminished hormonal levels, with disease and loss of sex drive.

Rebuilding vital hormones without the use of dangerous synthetic hormones, can be accomplished with a doctor trained in Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.  Your doctor will measure your hormones along “free testosterone” that hormone which is not bound up performing other functions.  Suzanne Somer’s book “Breakthrough” is a compliation of interviews from advanced medicine doctors.  In her report on  hormone replacement therapy she recounts the story of when her husband was in serious decline resulting from a loss in hormonal levels.  He was 60 and was sleepy most of the time, lacked energy, his muscles were shrinking and he had loss interest in sex. She writes that 10 years later he is back to his old self, loaded with energy and vitality, with improved mood and sex drive.  This renewal of vitality was accomplished with Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, which replaced his missing testosterone, DHEA, progesterone, pregnenolon, along with detoxification, strengthening his adrenal glands.  This was accomplished by maintaining a rigorous supplement program and getting nine hours of sleep each night.  His muscles are toned and well defined.  He looks healthy and exudes energy.  With hormone replacement therapy, Suzanne and her husband have enjoyed a remarkable improvement in their lives.

To find a innovative medicine doctor practicing Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy visti for a complete list.

Curvy Women

The perception of what constitutes the perfect female body varies around the world.  In todays western culture a thin, super model figure has been promoted as the appealing female size.  However most men feel just the opposite and consider women with proportionally smaller waist and larger hips as the preferred measure of beauty.

So ladies, the next time you wonder if your hips are too big for those jeans, or you don’t  meet the media’s beauty standards, you can take comfort in a number of research studies that show women with larger hip size and a proportionally smaller waist are healthier with significantly fewer adverse health events.

According to a study conducted by Dr. Ronald Kahn, of Harvard University, the type of fat that collects around the hips is beneficial and may help to prevent type 2 diabetes.  Fat that collects around the skin is known as subcutaneous fat, which is found to help improve sensitivity to insulin which regulates blood sugar levels. An ample bottom may also produce a particular type of hormone called Adipokines that can offset the negative affects of abdominal fat.  There are essentially two different body types to describe a woman’s body.  One body type is pear shaped and the other resembles an apple.  Both shapes have certain health implications that can be beneficial or detrimental.  Pear shaped women resemble the curvature of a pear with less weight at the top and waist and more weight in the hips and thighs where fat is stored.  Apple shaped women typically store more fat in the upper torso with large breast, waist and stomach, coupled with a flatter bottom and thinner legs.

in a 24 year long study, Swedish scientist Dr. Lauren Lissner, studied 1400 women between the age of 38 to 60 years old to determine the incidence of myocardial infarction, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, gall bladder disease and related mortality rates in relationship to body type.  Study results were adjusted for smoking, body mass index and waist circumference.  The remaining variable was associated with larger hip size, which provided protection against related diseases and higher mortality rates.  The study was the first to reveal decreased longevity in women with a high waist to hip ratio (WHR)

It was speculated that apple shaped women with a high WHR ratio had a consistently higher mortality rate due to the larger waist size which predisposes those women to a variety of heart related diseases, due to the excess fat (known as visceral fat) that grows around the vital organs in the belly.  For some reason, excess fat around the stomach region makes a woman  more resistant to the actions of insulin, which exposes an apple shaped woman to type 2 diabetes along with other metabolic disorders.  Women with pear shaped physiques store more fat in the bottoms and are less likely to have fat circulating throughout their bodies.  Pear shaped women are more likely to develop osteoporosis after menopause.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services conducts the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey  (NHANES) among American adults and children.  The study revealed that the female’s hips and thighs are relatively high in Omega 3 fatty acids necessary for brain development of children.  The cognitive testing scores showed the lower the waist to hip ratio the higher the mental testing results.  Conversely, the larger the waist sizes as compared to the hips the lower the cognitive testing scores.  The University of Pittsburgh and California uses NHANES data to compare women’s waist to hip ratios with scores on cognitive testing.  Researchers determined that the smaller the waist, the larger the hips, the higher the mental testing scores of both the women and their children.  Babies of mothers who breastfeed can benefit both physically and intellectually from the higher levels of Omega 3 fatty acids stored in the fat of the mothers hips and thighs.  Omega 3’s are essential for the health, development and maintenance of the brain.

To determine if you are pear or apple shaped divide the size of your hips into your waist, if you are .08 or less then you are pear shaped.  Above .08 means you apple shaped. If you are a man, then 1.0 or above means you are apple shaped.  The waist measurement for apple shapes is 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men.  A balanced diet and regular exercise is the best way to avoid excess weight and reduce fat.  While apple shaped women are more subject to health complications, due to their upper middle fat distribution, they can generally lose weight faster than pear shaped women whose stored fat in hips and thighs makes it more difficult to lose weight.

According to Dr. Michele Olson, PhD, professor of exercise science at Auburn University in Montgomery, AL, “It’s been scientifically shown that fat in the central body area, the upper body, chest, thorax, and so on, is mobilized much more readlily than fat in the gluteal and femoral (hips and thighs) area.”  Olson recommends that pear shaped women work to a total weight reduction program rather than focusing on losing weight in lower body.

For your eyes only

When asked about their most feared health concerns seniors are most worried about going blind or the inevitable diminishing of vision that accompanies old age.  Studies now show that life style changes, proper diet and nutrients can protect against age related vision loss.  During my last eye exam I asked the doctor which nutrients and dietary plans should I follow to maintain healthy eyes.  He explained that other than periodic exams there was nothing else I could take to protect my vision.  Protecting ones vision should be a priority, since age related macular degeneration, referred to as ARMD, is the leading cause of blindness in older adults.  Diabetic retinopathy is also a major cause of blindness among those people afflicted with type 2 diabetes.   Cataracts, which is a clouding of the eye lens, is also a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

Studies show that eye drops containing Carnosine, an amino acid, can inhibit cataracts by protecting against the formation of the lens proteins that impairs vision.  ARMD is a deterioration of the macular, which is that part of the retina that enables us to see in fine detail.  ARMD affects central vision needed for recognizing faces, driving and reading.  The blurriness and darkness makes it difficult to carry out normal daily activities.  There are two forms of ARMD, dry and wet.  Dry macular degeneration is the most common form and affects 90 percent of those afflicted with the disease.

The wet form of ARMD affects the remaining 10 percent and is the aggressive form and can cause major vision loss within two to three years.  It’s reported that there is no treatment to cure ARMD and the severe vision loss.  However, there are published studies from Dr. Phillip J. Rosenfield MD, PhD, associate professor, Department of Ophthalmology, at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute on treating the wet form of ARMD with colorectal cancer drug Avastin.  Since the discovery doctors have injected small, single quantity doses of Avastin, successfully, in the eyes of 7000 patients with notable improvements within a week.

Inflammation has a devastating effect on our overall health, causing widespread chronic illnesses, from cataracts to cancer.  Researchers have reported to the Archives of Ophthalmology that high levels of the inflammation marker, C-reactive protein CRP, in people with macular degeneration.  Antioxidants reverse the inflammatory affects reflected in higher levels or CRP.

In a report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association investigators found high dose supplementation with beta carotene, vitamins C, E and Zinc was shown to slow the progression of ARMD.  The essential fatty acids in omega 3 fish oils help to prevent dry eye symptoms.  The study conducted in Netherlands with 10,275 people over the age of 55 also revealed that high dietary intake of vitamin and zinc was associated with a lower of incident ARMD.

There is a wide range of foods that protect ARMD, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy,.  Carotenoids are the pigments found in colorful fruits and vegetables.  Lutein and zeaxanthin, which is found in the eyes, can be can also be found in leafy vegetables, eggs, green peas, corn, zucchini which have been promoted for their antioxidant qualities.  Try to get at least two serving per day of leafy vegetables, to ensure you get enough of the daily requirements.  Red wine has been shown to help prevent cataracts.  Billberry, ginkgo biloba, green tea, fish kale, spinach and grape seed has been shown to retard the progression of cataracts, ARMD and diabetic retinopathy.  The superhero of antioxidant is the grape officially known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins or more commonly as OPC, the substance in plants that protects them from free radical damage from sun light.  Free radicals are a natural by-product from normal metabolism but when the body is overburdened with them, or simply get out of control, they create a condition in the body known as oxidative stress which leads to disease, sickness and the acceleration of the aging process.

Think of the oxidation process like an apple that turns brown, or piece of raw meat turning rancid after being left out, or rust on a car when exposed to inclement weather.  Antioxidants like those found in OPC’s (like grape seed extract) helps protect us from cellular damage caused by free radicals and a variety of other environmental substances, including sunlight.

The power of energy healing

Many of our 3000 hours of testimonial stories are amazing and while I believe Ringmaster Rubbing Oil is a remarkable product, I have always had the belief that an unseen force empowered by the energy of human touch is a necessary catalyst for helping relieve chronic pain. Many of those people who gave testimony had the benefit of a loved one who applied the Rinmgaster oil to the affected area.  I listened, as my late father told a woman, whose husband was in extreme back pain, to massage him with Ringmaster Rubbing Oil.  He told her to pray for him while telling him she loved him.  Love and prayer is understood in all languages, it is the universal vibration for the transference of energy. The next day we received a phone call from his wife telling my father  her husband was up and feeling much better.  We went to their home in Pontiac Michigan and videotaped the story of his recovery.  His wife, without  knowing it, instinctively applied the techniques of energy healing.  Ringmaster Rubbing Oil acted as the channel to help  rebalance his energy field.

A more profound event occurred when a Mrs. Gines called and said her son had been examined by fourteen neurosurgeons, operated on and sent home to die within a week.  She  and her husband were inspired to rub him from head to toe everyday. Within a week her son had a complete remission.  His doctors considered him a medical miracle.  He lived happily and productively for another two and half years.  Ms. Moon, in Memphis, had not been able to walk to her mailbox.  Her son rubbed her knees with Ringmaster, making it possible for her to walk to her mailbox for the first time in five years. Energy medicine is no longer relegated to a mystical phenomenal.  Even conventional medicine is beginning to recognize the impact of energy healing on health.  According to Richard Gordon, author of “Quantum Touch, The Power to Heal,” life force energy permeates all living things.  The Chinese refer to this life force as “chi” which is the oscillating current of life that acupuncture practitioners seek to  harmonize in order to treat illness. According to Chinese philosophy, all matter contains a universal energy that has two polar opposites, the yin and the yang:  when unbalanced, disease or sickness is the result.  Indian yogis call energy “prana” through which they seek to achieve a higher level of consciousness. Make no mistake, with energy healing the healer does not heal the patient.  The energy healer only acts as a tuning fork to help the patient rebalance their energy field  in order to heal themselves.  Gordon refers to this occurrence as “entrainment,” which occurs when two similarly tuned systems that are vibrating at different frequencies readjust and vibrate at the same rhythm and phase.  Even animals and insects, of the same species, will convert their discordant sounds into a unified harmonic chorus.

Energy healers learn through meditation and deep breathing to bring their vibration levels to a frequency high enough to help the patient balance their energy levels.  The force of energy is a direct result of thought and intention.  The stronger the intention the more powerful the energy.

A toy company demonstrated how a ball, inside of a see-through plastic tube, could be controlled mentally by the player.  The player had sensors placed on his temples and was told to concentrate on how high he wanted the ball to go.  Focusing intensely, the player was able to mentally control how high the ball went up the tube.  With this power of intension, energy healing can happen up close or at a distance.  Spiritual healing often happens at a distance since prayers usually take place at a distance.  It has been proven medically that patients who are prayed for have a highter recover rate than those who are not.

Energy medicine is the active integration of the mind, body and the spirit.  We are an electrical force of energy, housed inside of a human body, surrounded by an electromagnetic field. With training we are capable of influencing our own health. During meditation or focused concentration, the brain emits powerful electromagnetic waves called Alpha waves that cycle at a signal between 8 to 12 hertz.

When athletes are performing at their maximum level, they are considered to be in the zone where Alpha waves precede the moments of peak performance.  Science has proven that meditation can reduce the physical effects of chronic stress and disease.

Dr. Valerie Hunt, of UCLA, conducted 30 years of research on the human energy field, concluding that the mind plays a critical role in patterning our electromagnetic energy fields, which helps to shape the physical structure of our bodies.

Losing “the kung-fu grip”

Last year we attended a major hair show to find out just how widespread carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is among hair stylist. The loss of grip strength by many hairstylist got me thinking about the 1970’s action doll “GI Joe with the Kung-Fu grip.” He was able to hold on to objects with his powerful kung fu grip. With carpal tunnel syndrome you lose grip strength. After 63 years of making and selling Ringmaster Rubbing Oil we know how effective it is in treating carpal tunnel. What we did not expect was how serious carpal tunnel is among hair stylist. In fact, almost 100 percent of the stylist, we encountered, had the symptoms of CTS. or were at a point where surgery was necessary.

Repetitive stress injury affects people in a wide range of occupations that require continuous use of the hands, including people who are diabetic. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an entrapment and compression of the median nerve that goes through the wrist to connect with the hand muscles. Repetitive hand use can affect hands with inflammation and swelling of the tendons. Most CTS people complain of hand tingling, loss of grip strength , numbness, pain in the elbow and shoulder, swelling in the wrist and loss in the sense of touch.

CTS disability tends to affect mostly women aged 40 to 60. Anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery are typically used to relieve the pressure from the ligaments that covers the median nerve. Many people who had CTS surgery complain of scar tissue growing back and recreating the original problem. Ever notice how often you see women cashiers wearing wrist supports? In our research we were surprised to find so many pet groomers, computer operators and medical technicians suffering from CTS. Some groomers have gotten such good results from Ringmaster they buy it by the gallon to make sure they will always have some on hand.

Additional things you can do to reduce the possibility of developing CTS involves a series of exercises and stretching that can be done throughout the day. Dr. William Kaufmana a pioneer in niacin research, found that positive results was found in grip strength among patients who took adequate amounts of the B vitamin niacinamide. CTS victims are often low in niacinamide. Using Ringmaster daily on the wrist and hands will help or prevent CTS pains. Regular muscle massage will also help: Rub the neck on both sides of the vertebrae and in an upward fashion for several minutes. Flex and extend both wrist separately with the opposite hand by rubbing and gently pulling the hand, wrist and each finger. Massage the wrist slowly while slighly pressing into the tendons of the wrist. Massaging the wrist just before going to bed will help prevent the night time tingling
